What is the Gospel? – Who is Jesus?
The word ‘Gospel’ literally translates to ‘Good News’ and in the Christian context it refers to the loving and all-powerful God sending his only Son, Jesus of Nazareth, on a rescue mission. This rescue is for all of creation but especially all of humanity.
The rescue mission involves a costly sacrifice, death on the Cross, and a marvellous miracle of resurrection to eternal life. The rescue is possible because Jesus willingly shares both his death and resurrection with all those who believe in him and his mission.
He shares his death, meaning believers don’t have to die. He shares his resurrection, meaning believers are raised to eternal life with him.
There are a number of other matters about the Gospel that we would love to share with you in person. For example the way in which death is connected to sin, the way in which the rescue mission was foretold in the ancient Jewish scriptures (the Old Testament) and how you might pray to God that he will give you this free gift of life.
Please reach out to us on our contact page or via our social media links so we can talk some more. In the meantime here are some bible passages that will help you think about the ‘Good News’.
Isaiah 53:4-6
Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
1 Corinthians 15:3-5
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared…
